My 3 tips for beginner lifeguards
- Learn the layout of your facility. It’s pretty apparent why this is important, but knowing the layout of the pool can help in an emergency by knowing the exits and medical equipment are but also the best extraction spots in the water.
- Stay in shape. It’s essential to stay in shape because, in a rescue, you not only have to be able to support your self but someone else as well. I recommend swimming for three 500’s a week and treading water for ten minutes also three times a week. Repetition is key.
- Learn to communicate with your coworkers. In a rescue, you need to be able to give and take directions to communicate effectively with your coworker. To practice this regularly talk with your coworkers to eliminate any communication barriers and feel comfortable in your ability not only to understand but to be understood as well.
